Nirbhaya (born in 1989) was the victim of the Delhi rape case on 16 December 2012. She lost her life on 29 December 2012 because of multi-organ failure in her body. Her real name was Jyoti Singh. The media gave her the name Nirbhaya which means fearless.

Nirbhaya was born in 1989 in the Ballia District of Uttar Pradesh. Her age was only 23 years old at the time of death. Her real name was Jyoti Singh. Her father’s name is Badrinath Singh and her mother’s name is Asha Devi. She has a brother. After her dad got a job in Palam Airport her family moved to Delhi.

She completed her 12th from a public school in Delhi. And after that, she starts preparing for the Pre Medical Test (PMT). But due to some reason, she failed in the PMT exam. Then she decided to complete her further studies. So she takes admission to Physiotherapy Institute, Dehradun to complete the degree in Physiotherapy. After completing her course in 2012 she returned to Delhi and joined an internship program at a hospital of Physiotherapy in Gurgaon.

 

She was in a relationship with Awindra Pratap Panday, who is a software engineer. There is some controversy is come about him that he taking money from the media for talking about the incident of that night said by news reporter Ajit Anjum.

The night of 16 December 2012 was the last night of Nirbhaya. She was returning home with her boyfriend after watching the movie “Life of Pi” in a movie theatre of Saket, South Delhi. The time was around 9:30 pm at that moment and they were looking for a rickshaw which drops them at home. Then they saw a white-coloured off duty private bus. Both of them entered the bus and saw there are only 6 male members are sitting inside the bus including the driver of the bus. The doors of the bus were tightly shut and the driver takes the bus on another route. When Awindra asked the driver where are you going, one of the male members on the bus tease the couple and asked them why are you travelling till late at night? This conversation becomes a fight between her boyfriend and the male member. The male member has beaten the Nirbhaya’s boyfriend with an iron rod and that time he became unconscious.

After that, the cruel members dragged Nirbhaya on the back seat of the bus and ruthlessly raped her one by one. When she tried to fight back one of the assailants takes a rusted iron rod and inserted into her private part, ripping her Intestine apart. After an hour, they threw Awindra and Nirbhaya from the moving bus near Mahipalpur. After some time a pedestrian passes from the road and found them lying half-dead on the road and immediately calls the Delhi Police. The Delhi police take them to Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi, where the doctors described her condition to be critical. They said only 5 per-cents Intestine was left in the woman’s body.

She was taken to the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore after the initial treatment at Delhi. On 29 December she died in Singapore. Her postmortem reports said that her genitals, intestine, and abdomen are suffered serious injuries.

Less than 24 hours of the incident the Delhi police arrested the bus driver with the help of CCTV Footage. The other suspects were also arrested by the police with the help of sketches explained by Jyoti and her friend.

She belongs to the Bhumihar religion.After the Incident a nationwide protest started. So many protestors clashed with the police at India gate and Raisina hill.The American Embassy released a statement, offering the condolence to Nirbhaya’s family on 29 December 2012.IPS Officer Chaya Sharma investigated the case with the help of her team of Delhi police.

It is very difficult for IPS officer for tracing the white bus in more than 1600 white private buses.Within 24 hours the Chaya Sharma and her team arrested the Suspects.Ram Singh committed suicide in the jail. In 2013, the family of victim established the Nirbhya Trust.The trust main aims are to provide protection and Shelter to help women who are experiencing violence.Delhi high court confirmed the death sentence for all the suspects.In 2015 Leslee Udwin directed and produced a documentary film “India’s Daughter”.A Netflix series is recently made on this incident.
